Three men, three sets of bullet wounds, and he realizes in some way he's responsible for all three. One hand traces gently over an angry red scar -- one of four healing wounds -- as Matt Parkman snores softly. He knows how close he came to losing this man -- this friend -- and he won't allow that to happen again. Too many friends lost, and he doesn't have very many to begin with. Parkman whimpers quietly in his sleep and he murmurs soothing words, shutters his thoughts away. Parkman doesn't need to deal with his brooding; Parkman needs to sleep well and recover, because he's not going to lose anyone else.

Mind blocked from Parkman's ability, he sighs and thinks about the other scars, other wounds. All of them far more than physical, all of them marking a transition point in his life that brought painful lessons. His life seems punctuated by the sound of gunshots, and he knows this isn't a good thing. He'd like it to be punctuated by the sounds of laughter and happiness -- but right now, the gunshots are necessary to protect that.

He absently rubs a hand over his own healed wound, the scar in his side a constant reminder of the measures he's willing to take to keep his family safe. This gunshot saved Claire's life -- he has no doubt of that. He can't exactly remember how it happened, and he knows that's a good thing, but he knows it was something he had done to protect his little girl. He'd do it again in a heartbeat -- he'd take a bullet to protect any member of his family, immediate or extended. It angers him to think that he has to go to these lengths to protect them from the people he used to work for, though. The fact that he's become as much a target as any of the 'specials' he used to hunt. The fact that any human being is a target -- and yes, that realization was a long time coming, and he's sad to admit that it should have come much earlier. It should have come well before another set of gunshots, ones he's much more directly responsible for than the ones Parkman lies there recovering from.

When he shot Claude he didn't want to -- he never wanted to hurt Claude, but he was boxed in, and back then he couldn't see any way out of it. He didn't even want the gun to go off -- was as surprised by it as Claude was when it did. He wanted Claude to give him the information, and they could have come up with some excuse, some plan to make management think Claude wasn't a risk. Some way to not have to do what he did. He would have lied to them for Claude, if only Claude had given him something to work with.

He still wonders to this day who it was Claude was protecting -- who meant enough to his friend for him to risk his life like that? Who was that important to Claude, and why didn't he even know about it? Why wasn't he that important? But Claude never said, and after that first shot he was angry at his friend for not giving him an out. They could have done something, said something-- and even now he has to admit there was nothing that would have saved Claude. All he would have done was made himself a target, too. And now Claude's body is marked with ugly scars, constant reminders of what he did to his friend to protect himself. He doesn't know if Claude will ever forgive him, but he knows that he'll never truly forgive himself...

Parkman whimpers again in his sleep and he frowns; calms his thoughts and projects the most soothing and calming nonsense he can. When Parkman starts breathing easier once more, he relaxes and settles back against the pillows. He has to find a way to keep them all safe; to keep this from ever happening again...
